Before your first solo flight you will need to get a medical certificate and complete a student pilot application.  

Private Pilot

Anchor 1

Course Requirements

 17 years old

 Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

 US citizen

Course completion requirements (FAR 61.109) 

 40 hours minimum of flight time, which must include 30 hours of flight instruction.

 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a helicopter.

 10 hours of solo flight time in a helicopter.

 3 hours cross-country time.

Instrument Pilot

Course Requirements

 Hold a Private Pilot Certification

 17 years old

 Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

 US citizen

Course completion requirements FAR 61.65 

50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command

  • 10 hours must be in helicopters for an instrument-helicopter rating.

Have a total of 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time including:

  • 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor

  • Instrument training specific to helicopters on cross-country flight procedures that includes at least one cross-country

Commercial Pilot

Course Requirements

 Hold a Private Pilot Cert

 18 years old

 Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

 US citizen

Course Completion Requirements FAR 61.129

Must log at least 150 hours of flight time as a pilot that consists of at least:

100 hours in powered aircraft, of which 50 hours must be in helicopters.

100 hours of pilot-in-command flight time, which includes at least -

   35 hours in helicopters; and

   10 hours in cross-country flight in helicopters.

20 hours of training on the areas of operation listed in § 61.127(b)(3) of this part that includes at least -

   5 hours IFR training including, partial panel skills, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, and intercepting and tracking navigational systems. 

   One 2-hour daytime cross country flight of more than 50 nautical miles 

   One 2-hour nighttime cross country flight of more than 50 nautical miles 

3 hours in a helicopter with an authorized instructor in preparation for the practical test within the preceding 2 calendar months from the month of the test.

Ten hours of solo flight time

One cross-country flight with landings at a minimum of three points, with one segment consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 nautical miles from the original point of departure

5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern)

At TruFlight Academy, we offer helicopter flight classes that cover a broad range of topics. This ensures that you receive a substantial background in the key concepts of operation, safety and regulations.

 

With us, you will learn about all major helicopter systems and components, and cover aerial navigation approaches. You will learn principles of aerodynamics as well as how weather can affect flight. You will also master key concepts of all the rules and regulations that address flight operations.

Helicopter Flight Training

In addition to practical instruction, you can look forward to the flight training aspects of our program. You will take the theoretical knowledge you develop in the classroom setting and apply it in real-world flight situations.

 

Our team of certified flight instructors will assist you in mastering the abilities necessary to become a skilled helicopter pilot. During flight training, you will become familiar with preflight procedures, particularly as they relate to inspection and preparation safety. You will learn the basic elements of flight, including takeoff, landing, hovering and other basic maneuvers. You will also learn critical emergency procedures, to ensure you are prepared for virtually any situation that could arise.
